Clarification provided on Packers football The Moorpark Saints recently placed advertisements in the Moorpark Acorn implying that they have existed since 1993 and were "previously known as the Packers." Neither statement is true. The Saints were formed in 2005 and have never been known as the "Packers." The Moorpark Packers Youth Football Program was formed by Rob Dearborn (then Moorpark High's varsity football head coach and now its athletic director) in 1989 with the help of the Moorpark Boys & Girls Club. The Packers joined the Pacific Youth Football League (PYFL) in 1993. In 2005, following the PYFL's adoption of new age and weight rules which the Packers felt were unsafe, the Packer board of directors voted unanimously to leave the PYFL and join with other former PYFL chapters from Westlake, Simi Valley, Fillmore and Santa Paula, as well as new chapters from Oxnard, Camarillo and Harvard Westlake School, to form the Gold Coast Youth Football League (GCYFL). In 2006 the Moorpark Packers will play their 17th season of youth football in the GCYFL, which completed a successful first season in 2005 and has expanded for 2006 by adding a Santa Clarita Chapter and many new teams. They will proudly wear green and gold while continuing their long standing relationship with Moorpark High School. As always, every Moorpark High football coach with a child in youth football will send their kids to play and will coach with the Packers. Paul C. Bauducco Vice President Moorpark Packers |
