Remove the blight and improve High Street The antique look of the existing shops and homes along the street reminds one of Andy Griffith's Mayberry. Movie companies often shoot in front of the old gas station or at some of the older-looking buildings that grace High Street. Now large portions of the old warehouse and silos on the south side of the street along the railroad tracks face demolition. City management is recommending removal of the warehouse to make way for a long-awaited development whose design is said to be in keeping with the "feel" of High Street. The project developer, still in deliberation with the city, will eventually enhance the aesthetic of the the street with new retail opportunties- a bonus for everybody who enjoys this special neighborhood. Those who believe that the structure is part of Moorpark culture should check their history books. The building was actually built in the 1970s and is not the original railroad station. The official Moorpark station burned down decades before. Meanwhile, the city of Moorpark has taken care over the years to keep the structure from falling into disrepair. Paint and windows, ruined by taggers and vandals, have been replaced many times. Because of the city's attention, the front facade still reflects the feel of the old Moorpark train station. Many visitors consider Moorpark's High Street to be the gem of the city, capable of having the same charm as oldtown Ventura or downtown San Louis Obispo. Thanks to the careful consideration of Moorpark city management, it should stay that way. |
