Legion Auxiliary is active in Moorpark Moorpark American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 502, was formed in September 1966 as a veteran's organization and a support system for Moorpark Post 502. Unit 502 supports four main activities during the year. +Girl State. High school junior girls are selected by the local units to attend this mock government program. Two girls from each Girls State program are chosen to attend Girls Nation in Washington, D.C., each July. Unit 502 is sending two girls, from Moorpark and Santa Susana high schools, to Girls State this year. +Veterans Lap Robe Program. The unit makes and collects donated new fleece blanket/throws to be delivered to veterans hospitals and clinics between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The unit delivered more than 1,200 throws in December last year. +Ceremonies. The unit joins the post in two ceremonies each year. A wreath is presented for the Moorpark Veterans Memorial on Memorial Day and Veterans Day, and a service is conducted later each day at Poindexter Park. +Poppies: Disabled veterans make paper poppies and the flowers are sold in May. Donations go to support veterans. The four flower petals represent dedication, sacrifice, responsibility and compassion. The red petals stand for blood; the black and green center is the mud of battlefields, and the green stem is symbolic of the forests and fields where wars have been fought. The flower represents the resurrection. The unit also conducts other fundraisers as needed, usually at the July 3 Fireworks and during Country Days New members are always welcome. Annual dues are $25. For more information, call Faye Beaver at (805) 529-1848 or e-mail fbeaver@pacbell.net or visit www.legion-aux.org. |
