Holiday crackdown nets 120 DUI suspects

City police, sheriff's deputies and California Highway Patrol officers from two area commands brought in 120 DUI suspects in Ventura County during the four-day Memorial Day weekend, nearly doubling the per-day rate of arrests during the 18-day Avoid the 14 campaign held at the end of last year.

Officers arrested an average of 30 people per day, compared with 16 per day in the longer winter campaign, which had a total of 287 arrests. There were no DUIrelated deaths during either campaign.

Avoid the 14, which gets its name from the 14 law enforcement agencies in Ventura County, will sponsor another four-day crackdown over Labor Day. Officers will be out again in force for the winter holiday effort.

The campaign is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
