Tribes to host powwow at Moorpark College

Redbird's Children of Many Colors Powwow will take place Fri. through Sun., July 20 to 22 at the Moorpark College athletic field, 7075 Campus Road, Moorpark.

The annual gathering will begin with an open flute circle at 6 p.m. Friday. American Indian flute players who attend Friday evening will be given a 10by10-foot vendor booth space free of charge for the weekend.

Powwow hours will be Friday from 6 to 10 p.m., Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday activities will include bird singing, gourd dancing, grand entry, intertribal and exhibition dances, and arts and crafts and food vendors.

All drums, dancers and the public are welcome.

Redbird, a Simi Valleybased nonprofit organization promoting Native American cultural awareness and preservation, received a $5,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, which enabled the group to put on the powwow.

Redbird is funded entirely through donations. Supporters are encouraged to take part in the organization's eScrip program. For information or to register, visit www.escrip.com.
