Barbecue may be a tradition That's what the Moorpark Chamber of Commerce hopes to accomplish tomorrow, Sat., Sept. 8 at the Underwood Farms/Tierra Rejada Ranch, set beneath the boughs of Moorpark's last surviving walnut grove. The featured event is a barbecue ribs competition, a change from the chili cook-offs put on by the surrounding communities. Tickets are only $10, and that includes vouchers for three free tastings from the barbecue competitors. Lisa Masotti, CEO of the Moorpark Chamber of Commerce, invited participation of the California BBQ Association, which now includes the Chamber as a member. "There are certain rules that competitors follow to make sure that each competition is done correctly. They have professional judges available for the competition, which will insure that all entries are treated fairly," said Masotti. The participation of both the Moorpark Rotary and Kiwanis clubs is also a big blessing, in Masotti's opinion. The Family Fall Festival & BBQ Cook-Off is replacing the Moorpark Apricot Festival, so it is important for the community to embrace it. To help draw in patrons, the event is featuring live music, including the Beatles tribute band Imagine, considered by some as one of the best fab four groups. Also pumping out tunes is the rock group Vertigo Blend. The event also includes rides, attractions, and arts and craft tables for the children. Take some time this weekend to rub elbows with your neighbors and taste some of the finest barbecue around. To get to the site from Moorpark, take Tierra Rejada Road east toward the 23 Freeway. Turn right (south) onto Sunset Valley Road just before the freeway on ramp. Past the equestrian center is the gate to Underwood Farms. Turn left into the parking lot. Keep going past the kiddy zoo and birthday center and you will see signs leading to the event. After we polish off our plates this year, we'll be looking forward to many more fall festivals and barbecue cook-offs in the years to come.
