The facts about the Chevron Tree I appreciate the opportunity to clarify what happened with the walnut tree on the Chevron service station. City staff and the Chevron Station owner also recognized the beauty and community value of the walnut tree that graced the property in front of the Chevron station for many years. This tree was a landmark for those who passed by on Los Angeles Avenue and Spring Road. During a recent remodel to the Chevron station, the station owners and Community Development staff both initially wanted to ensure the tree's protection. A careful review by a certified arborist from the Parks Department, however, found the tree to be in significant decline with fungus causing internal rot. The best course of action, and with a heavy heart, was to remove the tree and replace it with a healthy tree. The station owners agreed to plant a 48-inch box-size London plane tree to replace the walnut tree. This new tree, while not the same, will also grow to provide many years of scenic beauty. Barry K.
