Moorpark to celebrate Arbor Day The city of Moorpark's second annual Arbor Day Celebration is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Sat., March 8 at College View Park, 15400 Campus Park Drive, Moorpark. Admission is free. For the second year, Moorpark has been named a Tree City USA community by the National Arbor Foundation to honor its commitment to community forestry. At the event, a state forester will explain the origins of Arbor Day, and several certified arborists will be on hand to answer questions from the community. This year's event highlights the city of Moorpark's 25th anniversary of incorporation. A Silver Maple tree will be planted at the park to commemorate the city's silver anniversary. Residents are encouraged to plant a tree at home. A free 5gallon Purple Leaf Plum tree will be given to any interested person. Master Gardner Bill Dobner will also answer gardening and composting questions. A home composting unit will be at the event, and information outlining the city subsidy program for compost bins and worm bins (vermiculture) will be available. The event will also feature many displays, including "United Voices for Healthier Communities," "The International Society of Arboriculture," an antique 1939 tree truck, hand-crafted wood furniture, and tree tools and equipment. Smokey the Bear will make a visit. Craig Newton will provide music, and complimentary refreshments will be served. For more information, call the city (805) 517-6200 or visit www.ci.moorpark.ca.us. |
