Time for parents to go back to school A budget crisis is challenging how well our school district, known for its high standards, can keep functioning. The money is not pouring in from the top. Funds are being cut back so much that drastic steps to be taken over the next year will result in the reduction of school office and support staff and the elimination of successful educational programs. It's necessary for the parents of our students to work with the schools to find solutions. Parents are encouraged to contribute creative new ideas for education through school councils, local newspapers and at school district meetings. Teachers may ask parents to step in and volunteer their time and talents both in the classroom and with extracurricular activities. Parents may need to share more of the financial burden by helping to organize and participate in school fundraisers. A good attitude is important, too. Now is not the time to complain about or criticize individual teachers or the system as a whole. Building up our school district is far more productive than tearing it down. If family is important, then it's vital that families involve themselves in supporting the school system that educates their children. Consider this a parent's call to arms. Get in touch with your child's school and see how you can play a part in easing the pain of budget cuts. It's time to take an active part in your child's education. |
