Art project presented in flying colors

GRAND NEW FLAG- Art docent and art instructor Wendy Harper worked with students at Flory Academy to create an different look for Old Glory.
Ellen Bailey's fourth-grade class at Flory Academy of Sciences and Technology recently completed a group art project incorporating the design and ideas of the American flag.

Wendy Harper, landscape architect and school art docent, was teaching the class on the use of acrylic paint on canvas for the March art class titled "The United States and Teamwork." Harper talked to the students about pride in the nation's flag.

Each child was given a numbered canvas and a color copy of the piece of the painting they were going to paint. Harper explained that each child's painting was an important part of the team to create one united piece of art, just like each state plays a role in creating the United States of America.

The color copies of the painting pieces that each child received were abstract in nature and did not appear to them as a flag or anything recognizable. Harper told the students to paint their piece and at the end of class, as a team, they would be able to see what they had created.

At the end of class, Harper laid the pieces on the sidewalk, and walked the class out, as a team, to see their painting. The students cheered and were proud of the work they had accomplished.

The team painting was entered in the Women's Fortnightly School Art Contest.
