National Parks Service offers hiking, safety tips for outdoors The National Park Service recommends the following tips while hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area: •Carry plenty of water and drink it. Bring at least one quart for short walks. Longer hikes require more than one quart of water. Alcohol is not a good substitute for water. •Never hike alone. Use the buddy system so someone can go for help in case of trouble. •Stay on established trails and do not shortcut. •Plan out the hike ahead of time and inform a close friend or family member of the plan. •Wear sturdy footwear, such as hiking boots or sneakers. •Wear sunscreen, hats and sunglasses. A long-sleeved shirt is recommended for bright, sunny days. •State parks close during periods of extreme fire danger. Call (805) 3702301 for updates. •Do not smoke, and build no fires. •Carry a well-equipped first aid kit. •High temperatures can reduce a person's efficiency so travel light. The heaviest item a hiker should carry is water. •Early mornings and evenings can be cool. Dress accordingly. •Be aware that the southern Pacific rattlesnake lives in the mountains. Stay away from them and they won't bother you. Some things to remember are: Do not make an incision in order to draw out venom. To treat a bite, remain calm, splint the extremity and keep below heart level if possible, and transport to an emergency room. •Poison oak grows in moist, shady areas. Wearing long pants and staying on trails will help hikers to avoid it. •Be aware of ticks. Some ticks carry disease. Examine pets for ticks, check clothing, hairline and exposed skin after hiking. |
